Heating up a modern hot tub equipped with an external heater is no more difficult in the winter than it is in the summer. You need only fill the tub with water as usual, place logs and kindling inside the fire chamber and light the fire.

Depending on the surrounding temperature, you can reserve approximately a half an hour or an hour more time for heating the tub than in the summer. Take the initial temperature of the water into account if you pump the water directly from a lake through a hole in the ice, for example.

While warming the tub, you should keep it covered to prevent the heat from evaporating. Stir the water every once in a while to even out the heat.

Place the hot tub at an appropriate distance from the house or sauna building to reduce the distance which bathers need to travel in the cold between the hot tub and indoor spaces. Using footwear that is suitable for wet conditions is recommended. A bathrobe provides some protection against the cold during the short walk. It is recommended for bathers sitting in a hot tub to wear a woolly hat or sauna hat: headwear protects the bather from the steam, which cools the head.

After use, the hot tub should be drained to prevent parts that are susceptible to freezing temperatures, such as the heater or drain pipe, from freezing over and breaking. However, make sure to first check that there are no embers still burning in the heater, as even embers are hot enough to damage the inside of the heater when the hot tub is empty.

After drainage, clean the tub as usual: wash the tub, empty the fire chamber from ash and place the cover over the tub. The hot tub can then be left to wait for the next time it is used.

Most often people buy hot tubs when they are also doing other yard construction work, i.e. in the spring and summer. For winter use, a hot tub is often bought and set up in advance so that in the winter bathers need only heat up the bathing water and enjoy bathing.

However, there is nothing stopping you from buying a hot tub in the winter. A hot tub can be temporarily placed on an even and load-bearing surface and you can make the final decisions regarding its installation in the spring. Then you can prepare a sturdy aggregate foundation, tiling or patio for the installation.
